I am a Staff Software Engineer at Axon. I specialize in distributed systems and scaling SaaS businesses in terms of technology and people.

As a highly experienced engineering leader and systems architect, I specialize in the design and development of software systems and engineering teams with a focus on value delivery, scalability and distributed systems. My proven ability to lead and grow engineering organizations to meet specific business goals leads to improved value delivery and effective scale. I bring excellent business acumen and communication skills to go with my technical expertise and I am a skilled and passionate mentor, tech evangelist and training leader.

The last ten years or so

Axon’s mission to Protect Life inspired me to join as a Staff Software Engineer in April of 2022 and begin a new journey.

Loop Returns

January 2020 – April 2022

Starting at Loop as one of the first engineering hires following a Series A investment round, I was hired to build and lead a platform and infrastructure focused team to start preparing Loop’s applications and engineering processes for scale.

After leveling up the organization’s ability to scale the existing solution, I stepped into a Director of Engineering role and focused on improving engineering culture, doubling the size of the existing team and ramping up the architecture and infrastructure to support the continued accelerated growth of the company. I was instrumental in the planning and preparation for Loop’s Series B round, in which we successfully raised $65 million at a valuation 10x higher than at Series A.

After a key VP of Engineering hire, in January 2021 I moved into a more technical Staff leadership role in order to oversee our transition to an event-driven architecture, the deconstruction of the monolith and leveling up and doubling the team size once again while retaining our collaborative, open and people-first culture.

Sprint Media

2017 – 2020

By late 2016 Sprint Media’s CRM product “Campus” had reached a tipping point with demonstrable product/market fit and significant traction in market, and I was hired as a founding engineer to build an in-house engineering organization from scratch while working on scaling the existing application.

My success in building both the application and the team to support the scale we were seeing led to my promotion to Chief Technical Officer, where I was able to have significant impact on the success of our hiring, on-boarding and tool-chain processes.

Ambitious Digital & Alistair Shaw Consulting

2012 - 2017

I ran a team of contractors and consultants under the Ambitious Digital banner for a few years before going solo. We built applications for clients including (among many other things) two SaaS online learning platforms (one for foreign language learning, one for medical training), warehouse management and stock control systems for a handful of major UK electronics distributors and a variety of CRM and ERP tools including the highly successful Sprint Campus, a company I would eventually go on to work for full time.

This was the period when I started to build and sell my own product (Vendirun). Initially billed as a CRM, it grew into a fully fledged ERP and Real Estate management tool even to the point of having a built-in website content management system. The product eventually failed as a standalone business, but still has customers using the original code to this day!
